Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American musician and singer, better known under her stage name, Queen Latifah. Her work as Queen Latifah in television, film and music has won numerous accolades. They include an Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, New Jersey. Her parents are Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Their divorce occurred when Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was born and brought up in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah refers to an Arabic word which means "delicate and compassionate". Her cousin granted it to her at the age of eight. Latifah, 5-foot-10" tall forward on her high school team was always tall. The song she sang was"Home" from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah started beatboxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah is among the founding members of Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King, recorded an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to host Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was a member of Latifah at the time and was awed by the track. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
